Who Needs Tooth Whitening?
Many people want to top up their smile from time to time. Whitening can be especially beneficial for people who drink a lot of coffee, tea or red wine, or for smokers or people taking certain medications that can discolour the teeth.
The Process
Whether you choose in-chair or at-home whitening, we’ll start with a check-up to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy and there is no active decay or leaky restorations. If any treatments or restorations are needed, these will be completed before we commence with whitening. We’ll also typically do a cleaning, unless you’ve had one in the past six months.
In-Chair Whitening: In-chair whitening is a separate 90-minute appointment. Because the concentration of the whitening agent is quite high, we take care to ensure that the lips, tongue and gums are protected. After isolating all the tissues, we’ll apply the whitening agent in 3-4 rounds.
We’ll provide aftercare instructions, sensitivity gel and a take-home kit so you can touch up your smile at home.
At-Home Whitening: We’ll take impressions of your teeth, which will be used to create custom whitening trays. We’ll give you the trays, whitening gel and instructions so you can whiten your teeth at home. You’ll typically use the gel for 30-45 minutes every night for two weeks. You’ll have extra gel to use for any touch-ups later on.
FAQ
What’s the difference between these whitening options and over-the-counter whiteners?
Many over-the-counter whiteners can be damaging to both tooth enamel and the tissues of the mouth. In addition, we take care to ensure your teeth and mouth are healthy before beginning a whitening process.
Any invasive or surgical procedure may carry risks. Before moving forward, it is recommended that you seek a second opinion from an appropriately licensed medical professional.
