Types of Dental Emergencies
Here are some of the most common kinds of dental emergencies:
- A toothache that doesn’t respond to painkillers
- Sudden and significant swelling
- A fractured tooth
- A knocked-out tooth
In cases of a front tooth fracture, which we consider an aesthetic emergency, we do our best to fit in patients, as a cracked or chipped front tooth can affect a smile’s appearance.
When to See the Dentist & When to Head to the ER
You may wonder if you should go to the hospital or the dentist in case of a dental emergency. If you think your jaw may be fractured, or you have any broken bones, head to the hospital as soon as possible.
On the other hand, if it’s solely a tooth affected or a small lip tear, for example, we encourage you to visit the practice straightaway. Particularly in a situation where you may have knocked a tooth out, time is of the essence as the tooth will need to be replaced in place as soon as possible.
Contacting Us After Hours
If you experience any after hours dental emergency, please email the practice, as our dentists may be able to access this after hours and respond to you. You can also call the ER department at the hospital.
The Importance of Prompt Care & Prevention
Some people may ignore their pain, but that can be a mistake, as dental issues can progress quickly. In many situations, it may start as a mild ache for a few days and suddenly progress to a large swelling or significant discomfort that cannot be alleviated with pain killers. This is why we suggest not leaving things until they get to this stage. Things are generally much simpler to treat when dealt with early on.
As we are strong advocates of preventative care, we find that when patients come in for regular check-ups and cleans, we can detect any issues a little earlier, rather than letting them become an emergency.
