Sleep Dentistry in Kingsley
At Serene Smiles Perth, we’re committed to providing exceptional dentistry that’s also comfortable. That’s why our dentists offer patients an array of sedation options so they can get the dental care they need without apprehension. We offer the following types:
Local
A local anesthetic such as Lidocaine is injected to keep you from feeling discomfort in a targeted area of your mouth during a dental procedure, such as a filling, tooth extraction, crown, dental emergency or treatment of gum disease.
Nitrous oxide
Often referred to as “happy gas,” this type of sedation will help you relax during the procedure. This is administered via inhalation. A device is placed on your nose that you breathe through. The gas will be given throughout the whole procedure, and you will be awake the entire time, but feel slightly relaxed during. Because nitrous oxide comes out of your system much more quickly than other options, you should be okay to drive a few hours after your procedure.
Oral sedation
With this option, you’ll be given what’s essentially a sleeping tablet an hour before your procedure. Whilst you won’t be asleep, you will be a little bit relaxed and drowsy, and likely won’t remember getting any dental work done. But you’re still aware of what’s happening while in the chair. If you opt for oral sedation, you can’t drive for 24 hours afterwards.
IV (twilight) sedation
With IV or twilight sedation, an anti-anxiety medication is administered through the blood during your dental treatment. You will be in a comfortable sleep, but it’s not a deep slumber. Although you won’t remember anything, you still will have many of your reflexes, such as breathing, swallowing, and coughing.
We have an external person come into the practice to provide this service. The doctor will constantly monitor your pulse and oxygen levels to ensure you don’t have a negative reaction to the sedative. In addition, your blood pressure will be taken before and after the procedure.
You won’t feel as groggy or have a recovery as difficult as you would with general anaesthetic but you still won’t be able to drive afterwards.
